The “30 / 30” contest – preview exhibition and announcement of results

Opublikowano

We would wholeheartedly like to thank everyone who participated in yesterday’s preview exhibition following the “30 / 30” contest. Also, it was during the preview that we announced the winner who obtained the prize money and a certificate of recognition from the head of the contest jury – Mr Rosław Szaybo.

The winner is… Mateusz Holak who created the album cover of the album “Piosenki. Pięćdziesiątka”, which includes greatest hits of the band Malarze i Żołnierze reinterpreted by various artists. What is noteworthy, the leader of Malarze i Żołnierze is the artist’s father. For Holak, who also pursues his music career in bands such as Małe Miasta and Kumka Olik, creating this cover had a sentimental value, due to the album’s character. Apart from the winning album cover the exhibition contained other designs by Mateusz Holak: cover of the album “Yoko Eno” by Kumka Olik, cover of “Polka” by Wojtek Mazolewski Quintet and cover of “Jakby nie było jutra” by Happysad.

MWe hope that this award will mark the beginning of the author’s successful career in the plastic arts. We also would like to congratulate all artists whose works are displayed on the exhibition, as well as all those who submitted their entries. Choosing the thirty best works was really a hard nut to crack!

Simplicity is sometimes the key to creating a work that will be remembered. The design by Artur Jarzęcki which illustrates the album by Marek Walarowski Trio entitled “Seven Stairs to Hell” is very sophisticated in its simplicity. No wonder that the contest jury liked it. It visually represents the album’s title and makes it easier for the audience to memorize it. At the same time it heralds a profound music experience awaiting the listener. This and twenty-nine other album covers will be displayed since 5 June 2015 on the “30 / 30” contest follow-up exhibition.

“Resposibility is getting me down…” – these words are sung by Małolat on his recent album in a song which describes the transition from the world of a teenager to the world of a parent. This transition is illustrated on the album cover designed by Grzegorz “Forin” Piwnicki, where the window becomes a symbol of transgression between an empty room and the world full of splendour but equally void of emotions. “Więcej” is one of the few album covers among the top thirty which relies on artistic use of photography. The author himself created a number of excellent designs last year, four of which are included in the “30 / 30” contest exhibition.

In a few days (5 June) the preview exhibition of works awarded in the “30 / 30” contest will take place. The 14th album cover which can be found among the thirty designs of 2014 is that of the self-titled EP by Life Lifting, a group from Bielsko-Biała. The retro style cover created by Łukasz Pach matches the spirit of the album which, on the one hand, evokes the golden age of hard rock and rock’n’roll and, on the other hand, introduces new, intriguing sounds. Just like the whole album, the cover seems quite aggressive, in a positive sense.

The 13th album cover to appear on the “30 / 30” contest exhibition is the design by Mateusz Holak created for the band Kumka Olik. The band leader’s work alludes to the first stage in the development of abstract art and, at the same time, to the simplicity typical of art created in the interwar period. The design was part of the author’s BA paper, which initially was planned to be utilized for an abstracted vinyl record. Eventually the album entitled “Yoko Eno” was released in the form of the CD, but perhaps it will also appear as a vinyl.
